Amazon.com essential video
This seminal 1988 thriller made Bruce Willis a star and established a new template for action stories: "Terrorists take over a (blank), and a lone hero, unknown to the villains, is trapped with them." In Die Hard, those bad guys, led by the velvet-voiced Alan Rickman, assume control of a Los Angeles high-rise with Willis's visiting New York cop inside. The attraction of the film has as much to do with the sight of a barefoot mortal running around the guts of a modern office tower as it has to do with the plentiful fight sequences and the bond the hero establishes with an LA beat cop. Bonnie Bedelia plays Willis's wife, Hart Bochner is good as a brash hostage who tries negotiating his way to freedom, Alexander Godunov makes for a believable killer with lethal feet, and William Atherton is slimy as a busybody reporter. Exceptionally well directed by John McTiernan. --Tom Keogh

Die Hard is the movie franchise that made a movie star out of TV star Bruce Willis, and created an entire action-movie genre of its own. In the original 1988 film, Willis plays wisecracking New York cop John McClane, who arrives at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles to meet up with his estranged wife, Holly (Bonny Bedelia), at her office Christmas party. As luck would have it, the company ends up in the middle of a terrorist plot led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) and his gang of expert killers, and with little help coming from outside, McClane has to pick off his enemies one by one. Thus was born the "Die Hard genre", epitomized by such films as Under Siege (" Die Hard on a ship"), Passenger 57 ("Die Hard on a plane" ), Speed ("Die Hard on a bus"), and Cliffhanger ("Die Hard on a mountain"). But few measure up to the explosive brilliance of Die Hard. Director John McTiernan develops the action at a fast and furious pace, culminating in some fantastic set-pieces on the top of the building, in the elevator shaft, and in the building's outer plaza. Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza's script, based on Roderick Thorp's novel Nothing Lasts Forever, is smart, funny, and full of memorable lines (among them "Welcome to the party, pal!" and of course "Yippee ki-ay, motherf*****"), and the cast is perfection, especially Rickman as the cunningly evil villain, and Willis, whose McClane character--bloodied, beaten, bruised, and barely breathing, as he battles both bad guys and bureaucrats--is someone audiences could genuinely cheer for. --David Horiuchi

Description
Bruce Willi stars as New York City Detective John McClane, newly arrived in Los Angeles to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged wife (Bonnie Bedelia). But as Mclane waits for his wife's office party to break up, terrorist take control of the building. While the terrorist leader, Hans gruber (Alexander Godunov) round up hostages, McClane slips away unnoticed. Armed with only a service revolver and his cunning, McClane launches his own one-man war. A crackling thriller from beginning to end, Die Hard explodes with heart-stopping suspense.

4 out of 5 stars Now A Classic Action Thriller   March 8, 2010
D. Mikels (Skunk Holler)
Here's the Good Flick Test. While channel surfing, you come across a movie on cable you haven't seen in years--often several years. You are only surfing due to boredom, or you are fleeing from another show's commercial break; in any event, you are only going to surf for a few minutes, then go about the business of your day or evening. You have no intention of altering your plans. . .until you come across that Good Flick.

Yep. DIE HARD is one of those. Who hasn't seen this movie? More than once? We're all familiar with the story: blue collar New York cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) suddenly finds himself in a strained long distance marriage, with his voluptuous wife (Bonnie Bedelia) now employed at a brand new LA high rise. During a Yuletide visit to the tower (an office Christmas party) the building is suddenly seized by snarling Euro terrorists--while McClane is able to sneak, undetected, to the upper floors still under construction. From there, he wreaks the havoc all DIE HARD fans have come to know and love, then utters an immortal "Yippee-kie-yay" epithet as the bad guys go down. Yes, it's all silly and farfetched; yet Willis is as likeable as he is self-deprecating ("Come out to the west coast," he deadpans as he crawls through a ventilation shaft under machine gun fire, "have a few laughs. . ."), and there is not a better villain in all the cinematic land than Alan Rickman. We even get to hate a snotty, arrogant reporter (William Atherton).

Forget the plethora of sequels; they're all nonsense supreme and merely take the McClane character to cartoon proportions. Go with the original DIE HARD; it's darn fun to watch, and worth stopping what you're doing to take in on cable. Yes, this flick passes the test.
--D. Mikels, Author, The Reckoning

4 out of 5 stars Non-Willis fans, you'll be surprised---   March 5, 2010
K. Laurey (Clark Mills, NY USA)
If there are any of you out there who---back in the Eighties---initially had a hard time buying Bruce Willis as an action hero and therefore never saw any of the Die Hard flicks.....surprise. I was one of the naysayers, and only recently saw the movie on DVD. Well, slap me up and call me silly. The guy is really believable as a normal, flawed family man who happens to be a cop, who happens to be caught up in a plot masterminded by people. Amazon's editing wizards prevent the use of some surprisingly inoffensive words (What's up with that, guys?) but let's say the baddies are a 9-letter word beginning and ending with "t". The usual action-flick extremes abound, but the movie is so well put together that it's easy to buy all the hoke. The cast is great (Alan Rickman paints an astounding picture of a villain) and Willis' John McClane just kind of gets under your skin, even if you never thought he would.
To keep it family-approved, you'll need a slightly edited version---a couple of graphic gunshots make it not-kid-friendly, and Willis's tendency to be a potty-mouth doesn't qualify him as the best role-model----but older audiences will find the story exciting.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of The Lot   February 26, 2010
PETER TULLOCH (NEW ZEALAND)
Well I have a huge collection of dvds at my house and over the next few years I am going to do a lot of reviews to help people make the right choices when it comes to starting off your own movie library. What can I say about this first Die Hard film only that I still think personally this is the best out of the lot. They (the die hard movies) are all good action films but the first has normally original ideas , Bruce is at his best and I still reckon this is Alan Rickmans finest hour as the baddie Hans Gruber.I am lucky I was in my teens when all these great films like Terminator , Predator and Die Hard were released. As they have kept these francises going in sequels and Television shows a lot of the younger generation are in awe of these earlier films , a lot have said to me how lucky I was to have seen these on the big screen when they came out.In these older films like Die Hard a lot of stuntmen were used , great sets and minatures were also made and that is what sets them apart , CGI was in its infancy back then, thats what makes them so special-the lack of CGI.I went to see Night At The Museum 2 with my wife and daughter and even though i did enjoy the film the cost of going to see it on the big screen was exspensive-$45.00NZ dollars , that included a icecream each and one big box of popcorn which we all sheared.Die Hard back in 88' cost me about $6.00NZ to go and see , for one adult now it is $14.00NZ so we tend not to go and see them on the big screen anymore.Anyway back to the movie - great performances by all , huge exsplosions and great one liners , what more can you want , directed by John McTiernan who also did Predator and The Hunt For Red October-one of my favourite directors who has all but disappeared now. This is a easy to watch film and it seems to be over before you know it ,which is the sign of a good film-fast paced and not boring.

5 out of 5 stars Die Hard   January 21, 2010
Arnita D. Brown (USA)
New York cop John McClane flies to Los Angeles on Christmas eve to spend the holidays with his family. He arrives at the Nakatomi corp. building for his wife's office party. International terrorists take over the building and hold every one as hostage to steel $600 million of bonds from the vaults of the building. Now its up to McCLane to face the terrorists and save his wife and the other hostages. "Die Hard" is a terrific example of what happens when all the pieces of a movie fall together perfectly. The perfect modern action movie.
